Chester Zoo is to open a new river attraction in 2015. The Lazy Boat Journey will allow visitors to take a 15-minute boat trip through a forest where they will be able to view Sumatran orang-utans, tigers and banteng (Asian wild cattle).
The ride will stretch for nearly half a kilometre, including a four metre drop waterfall, and feature 14 boats. Construction of the river bed is already underway.
Chester Zoo’s Simon Mann, who is spearheading the project, said: “Islands gives visitors the best of both worlds – the opportunity to stroll through these magnificent islands on foot or to take the more leisurely option of the boat trip.
“The Lazy Boat Journey will give visitors a taste of what it is like to explore the wild and take in some breath-taking sights including orangutans swinging through the treetops.”
The zoo says the ride will be a first for an animal attraction in the UK and forms part of its £30 m Islands redevelopment, which focuses on wildlife from the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Bali, Sumatra, Sumba and Sulawesi.
